Discover Golden Buddha

Tucked into the Evergreen neighborhood at 2768 Aborn Rd, San Jose, CA 95121, United States, Golden Buddha has quietly built a loyal following among locals who crave comforting, well-executed Chinese and Asian fusion dishes. I’ve stopped by more times than I can count-sometimes for a quick lunch between meetings, other times for relaxed family dinners-and each visit has felt consistent, welcoming, and satisfying.

The first thing you notice when walking in is the calm, no-frills dining room. It’s the kind of place where families gather around large round tables, servers move efficiently, and the aroma of stir-fried garlic and ginger fills the air. The menu is extensive without being overwhelming. You’ll find classic Cantonese-style dishes, Szechuan specialties, and American-Chinese favorites all in one place. That range matters. According to the National Restaurant Association, diners today value both variety and customization when choosing where to eat, and Golden Buddha delivers exactly that balance.

On my most recent visit, I ordered Mongolian beef, shrimp with scrambled eggs, and a clay pot tofu dish. The Mongolian beef arrived sizzling, with tender slices coated in a savory brown sauce that hit the perfect sweet-salty ratio. The shrimp with eggs felt light and comforting-fresh seafood folded gently into fluffy eggs with scallions. As for the tofu, it was braised slowly in a clay pot, which helps retain heat and deepen flavor. That traditional cooking method isn’t just for show; slow simmering allows proteins and vegetables to absorb sauces evenly, creating richer, more layered taste profiles. It’s a technique widely used in regional Chinese cuisine and supported by culinary research emphasizing heat retention and moisture control for flavor development.

One detail I appreciate is the portion size. Plates are generous, ideal for sharing family-style. In fact, sharing dishes is more than a habit-it’s part of Chinese dining culture, encouraging connection and conversation around the table. I’ve noticed how groups here naturally rotate dishes, offering tastes to one another. It creates a relaxed, communal vibe that many chain restaurants simply can’t replicate.

Customer reviews online consistently mention freshness and value, and that matches my experience. Vegetables retain their crunch, sauces don’t taste overly processed, and rice is served steaming hot. While I can’t speak for every single dish on the menu, the core staples-fried rice, chow mein, sweet and sour pork, and seafood plates-have remained dependable over the years. Consistency like that is crucial in the restaurant industry, where repeat customers are built on reliability as much as flavor.

Another standout is their lunch specials. During weekdays, you’ll see a steady stream of nearby office workers coming in for combination plates that include rice, an entrée, and soup. It’s efficient without feeling rushed. The staff works quickly but remains attentive, refilling tea and checking in without hovering. Service quality, as hospitality experts often point out, is one of the strongest predictors of positive dining reviews, and Golden Buddha seems to understand that instinctively.

Parking is convenient thanks to its location in a neighborhood plaza, which makes it easy for both dine-in and takeout customers. I’ve ordered takeout on busy nights, and the packaging has always been secure and organized, preventing spills-a small detail that shows care behind the scenes.

If you’re exploring dining options in South San Jose and want something dependable, flavorful, and reasonably priced, this spot is worth a visit. It may not be flashy or ultra-modern, but that’s part of its charm. It focuses on what truly matters: well-prepared dishes, a broad menu that satisfies different tastes, and service that keeps regulars coming back.

  • Friendly place with a unique ambiance. The food was taste and portions large, but at dinner it's hard to spend less than $50 even for a couple. The prices on the menu we're all about $5 more than what is shown on their website.

  • Ok the people complaining about this food are crazy. Take yo azz to panda! This was very good. Best I have had in awhile. Orange chicken was amazeballz! I love that the orange sause was separated so it wouldn't get soggy on the drive home. Food was cooked and ready to go on a Friday for dinner in a reasonable amount of time. Only thing I didn't like was 1 shrimp for the buda rice and 2 shrimp for the buda chow mein. Broccoli was not at all soggy. Cooked perfectly broccoli beef. I will be back! Love love the chow mein

  • Pretty small location, but the quality of food was absolutely delicious. It appears to be a family owned restaurant and has been there for over 45 years. The food was hot and fresh to order. I ordered three different plates of food which included sweet-and-sour chicken, Mongolian, beef and chicken lo mein. It was really delicious. Staff was very friendly. They accept card and/or cash, which is nice because usually old-school places like this do cash only.
